Take your HCL learning to the next level: optimise, troubleshoot and tackle complex scenarios

Designed for diabetes healthcare professionals working with Hybrid Closed Loop, this practical masterclass will immerse you in the optimisation and troubleshooting challenges you face in everyday practice. By working through practical cases with HCL experts, you will discover how to get the best from different systems and algorithms and explore what to change when outcomes are not as expected. Through interactive, case-based learning, you will tackle the more complex scenarios you are increasingly encountering - from exercise, alcohol and mealtime challenges to changing insulin requirements, GLP-1s, renal impairment and managing menopause.

Applied HCL optimisation

Move beyond the fundamentals and tackle the decisions that make HCL challenging in practice

Developed from feedback and research with healthcare professionals working with HCL, this practical one-day masterclass focuses on the areas where further knowledge, troubleshooting and clinical judgement are most valuable.

The morning programme will compare HCL systems and algorithms, explore what to adjust when outcomes are not as expected and look ahead to Fully Closed Loop and emerging technologies, giving you practical insight to support optimisation decisions in clinical practice.

Afternoon workshop options

Six workshops, three choices, one highly practical afternoon:

Each workshop will use complex, case-based scenarios to explore how and when to make changes, what to try when outcomes are not improving and when a different approach may be required.

1. Optimise HCL around exercise                 or 2. Renal impairment and dialysis

3. Weight management, insulin resistance and GLP-1s or 4. Alcohol and drug use with HCL

5. Carbohydrates, food and bolusing         or 6. Menopause and HCL

*On making your booking you will receive an email requesting the three workshops you would like to attend. We recommend making your selections as soon as possible to avoid disappointment should one of your first-choice workshops become fully booked.

Your experience

Bring your challenging Hybrid Closed Loop cases

Are you supporting someone using HCL whose outcomes are not improving as expected? Are you unsure which setting to adjust first, whether behaviour or system choice is contributing, or what else you could try?

Attendees are invited to submit a short, anonymised HCL case study for consideration as part of the Interactive case study discussion: When HCL is not delivering the expected outcomes at 11.20. Selected cases will be explored with Professor Mark Evans and fellow attendees, providing an opportunity to consider different approaches, benchmark your thinking and discuss what you might try next in practice. The session will also include additional expert cases to ensure a broad range of optimisation and troubleshooting challenges are explored.

Please view the Case studies tab for further information.

Applied Hybrid Closed Loop Optimisation and Troubleshooting Masterclass is taking place on the following dates and locations:

  • Thursday 11th March 2027 – DoubleTree by Hilton Bristol
  • Thursday 15th April 2027 – Holiday Inn London Bloomsbury
  • Thursday 16th September 2027 – Manchester

Co-located course

Step-by-step Guide to HCL and CGM Data Interpretation

A practical approach to reading downloads and making clinical decisions:

  • Thursday 11th March, DoubleTree by Hilton Bristol
  • Thursday 15th April, Holiday Inn London Bloomsbury
  • Thursday 16th September, Manchester
  • Tuesday 12th October, Birmingham

Co-located with the Applied Hybrid Closed Loop Optimisation and Troubleshooting Masterclass, this interactive course will be led by Geraldine Gallen from King's College Hospital NHS Foundation Trust. All attendees will come together for shared opening sessions on HCL technology, systems and algorithms, followed by industry partner rotations and networking, before moving into their dedicated programmes.

This course is designed for healthcare professionals who need to interpret HCL and CGM data and use it to inform clinical decisions. It is particularly relevant if you are newer to HCL, are not initiating HCL yourself but need to understand the data or are increasingly encountering people using HCL in general diabetes clinics and would benefit from a more structured approach to reviewing downloads, assessing outcomes and deciding what to do next.

Invitation to sponsor

Connect with healthcare professionals advancing their HCL practice

The Applied Hybrid Closed Loop Optimisation and Troubleshooting Masterclass and Step-by-step Guide to HCL and CGM Data Interpretation will bring together healthcare professionals at different stages of their HCL learning - from those developing their skills in interpreting downloads and making clinical decisions, to experienced HCL users looking to advance their approach to optimisation, troubleshooting and complex clinical scenarios.

Dedicated industry partner rotations and networking time will bring both audiences together, providing sponsors with the opportunity to showcase the latest technologies, tools and functionality, share practical solutions to common challenges and support healthcare professionals to get the best from HCL in clinical practice.

To find out more about the engagement and branding opportunities available in the full sponsorship packages, please contact Vanessa Jarman or call Vanessa on 01732 897788.

Share your challenging HCL case

Bring the optimisation and troubleshooting challenges you are experiencing in clinic

Is HCL not delivering the outcomes you or your patient expected? Are you unsure what is driving a persistent glucose pattern, which setting to tackle first or whether a different approach is needed?

All attendees are invited to submit a brief, anonymised case for consideration as part of the Interactive case study discussion: When HCL is not delivering the expected outcomes at 11.20.

Selected cases will help shape the discussion on the day, giving you the opportunity to work through real HCL challenges with Professor Mark Evans and healthcare professionals facing similar decisions in their own practice.

What are we looking for?

We are looking for practical HCL optimisation and troubleshooting scenarios where the best next step may not be immediately clear.

Your case might involve:

  • Persistent hyperglycaemia or hypoglycaemia despite HCL
  • Time in range not improving as expected
  • Deciding which settings to review or adjust first
  • Understanding whether the algorithm or system settings are contributing
  • Bolusing, carbohydrate or mealtime challenges
  • Behaviour, engagement or expectations affecting outcomes
  • Deciding whether a particular HCL system is meeting an individual's needs
  • Changing insulin requirements or clinical circumstances
  • A complex download or glucose pattern that is difficult to interpret
  • A situation where you have tried several approaches but are still looking for a solution

What should you submit?

Your brief, anonymised summary can include:

  • The situation: relevant background and HCL system
  • The challenge: what is not working or what are you finding difficult to interpret?
  • What you have tried: any settings or approaches already considered
  • The outcome: what happened following any changes?
  • Your questions: what would you particularly value the perspectives of Professor Evans and your peers on?

Example case:

Alex, aged 34 (example only)

  • Diagnosed with type 1 diabetes aged 15
  • Using CamAPS FX with a Dana-i pump and Dexcom G6 for eight months
  • Overall glucose management has improved, but time in range remains below target
  • Persistent hyperglycaemia after evening meals
  • Finds pre-meal bolusing difficult because meal times and carbohydrate intake vary
  • Experiences occasional hypoglycaemia following post-meal highs
  • Limited improvement after reviewing bolus timing and carbohydrate ratios
  • Questions: What is driving the pattern of post-meal hyperglycaemia followed by occasional hypoglycaemia? Should we adjust his HCL settings, revise his mealtime bolusing strategy or consider a different approach?

Please include your contact details and which event you are attending.

Please ensure that all patient-identifiable information is removed before submitting your case to sarah.kemm@sbk-healthcare.co.uk
