A core clinical programme for the next generation of diabetes care
EXTOD HCP: Fundamentals in Exercise and Type 1 Diabetes Care was delivered by EXTOD and organised by SBK Healthcare. This one-day training event was designed to equip healthcare professionals who are new to the topic or looking for a clear refresher with the core principles, practical tools, and confidence to support people with Type 1 diabetes to exercise safely and effectively.
Attendees working in both adult and paediatric care left with a strong foundation in the basics of glucose management around exercise, plus clear, usable advice to apply in clinical conversations straight away.

Practical, evidence-based fundamentals in exercise and Type 1 diabetes care
EXTOD HCP: Fundamentals provided participants with essential, evidence-based knowledge on managing Type 1 diabetes around exercise. On the day the delegates heard from leading clinicians and researchers, learnt directly from lived experience, and took away simple, structured strategies to use immediately in practice.
This was an ideal day if you:
- are early in your career or new to diabetes and exercise support
- want a step-by-step introduction to safe exercise guidance in T1D
- would benefit from practical examples, case studies and interactive learning

A beginner-friendly, practical training day for healthcare professionals.
Within this supportive environment for peer learning, networking and confidence-building, attendees left better equipped to support people with Type 1 diabetes to exercise safely and confidently. Key learning points included:
Introductory case study-led sessions on:
- The key challenges people with Type 1 diabetes face when exercising
- Diabetes management insight from someone who exercises regularly with Type 1 diabetes
- Understanding exercise settings for pump and closed loop systems, and how to use them in practice
Fundamental workshops on:
- Assessment, starting advice and using CGM for exercise
- Basic insulin adjustments to improve glucose control around activity
- Using exercise as a tool for glucose management, including defining, applying and refining approaches
Practical discussion-based sessions on:
- Sports nutrition essentials, including carbohydrate and protein to fuel performance and recovery
- Supporting different exercise types across the week
- Motivation and safety, helping people who are overweight to start and maintain exercise
CPD accredited
The EXTOD Healthcare Professionals National Conference applied for CPD credits from Federation of the Royal Colleges of Physicians of the UK, and certificates were provided to all attendees.

The EXTOD Faculty Clinical Educators brought together experienced healthcare professionals and people with lived experience who actively support individuals with Type 1 diabetes to exercise safely and confidently. Drawing on frontline clinical practice, education and patient engagement, the faculty focused on translating evidence into practical, person-centred advice that works in real-world settings.
Throughout the day, faculty members led interactive workshops and discussions, sharing practical strategies for glucose management before, during and after exercise, addressing common challenges faced in clinic, and supporting healthcare professionals to deliver confident, consistent and supportive exercise guidance.
