EXTOD Healthcare Professionals National Conference was delivered by EXTOD and organised by SBK Events. 


This unique forum was created to equip Diabetologists, Diabetes Specialist Nurses, Dietitians and Paediatricians with the knowledge, inspiration, and practical understanding of how to support Type 1 patients to undertake safe and effective exercise.

Evidence-based presentations, case study led workshops and invaluable lived experience

Those who attended these EXTOD days were provided with current, evidence-based knowledge on managing Type 1 diabetes for exercise. Attendees were also be able to speak with experts in the field and leave with practical advice and clear strategies to use with patients with T1D in a clinical setting.

A unique opportunity for sharing ideas, networking and peer learning

Now in its 8th year, this EXTOD National conference offered two full days of valuable learning so that enrollees could understand, manage and support people with Type 1 diabetes to undertake safe and effective exercise.


The key learning outcomes included case study led presentations on:

  • The challenges someone with Type 1 diabetes faces when exercising
  • Experience of semi elite and elite sports people
  • Exercise setting for each pump / closed loop system and how to use these settings for exercise
  • New trials in Type 1 diabetes and exercise
  • Latest update on technology and exercise
  • Sports focus: specific insights into diabetes and exercise management


Plus there were interactive workshops in small groups on:

  • Assessment for exercise, staying safe, glucose targets and insulin changes
  • Dietary assessment and carbohydrate loading
  • Food and fluid intake, GCM replacement regime and controlling glucose through exercise
  • Managing race /event day: what to do prior, on the day and postrace management
  • Advance technology: adapting simple strategies and trouble shooting insulin
  • Managing PE classes and short events: diet, insulin and glucose monitoring
  • Special circumstances: low carb diets, hot and cold weather adaptations
  • Dealing with multisports and how to plan changes
  • Getting the most out of a continuous glucose monitor when exercising
  • Supporting the female athlete: changes in advice on the period and menopause
  • Different training regimes: fasted training, training twice per day, sleep low training low

In the main room, attendees will be introduced to each pump / closed loop system and be talked through features for exercise and how to use. At the end all attendees will receive a summary sheet of the pros and cons of each system and recommendations for which system might suit different people.
